Get started in the UK

The practical order of things for your first days on a UK Youth Mobility working holiday: what to sort, when to do it, and where to go next. Your NHS access is already prepaid through the IHS.

    Before you fly

    Sort your phone and data

Employers, banks, landlords and the NHS all need to reach you on a UK number.

Install a travel eSIM for the airport run, then get a cheap SIM-only deal. Budget MVNOs like giffgaff, SMARTY, Lebara and VOXI give generous data on no-contract 30-day plans.

    Book your first nights

You need a roof and an address to give the bank and employers before you sign a tenancy.

Book a hostel or short stay for your first week or two while you scout areas near where you will work.

    Day one

    Open a UK bank account

UK employers pay into a UK sort code and account number, and rent runs by direct debit.

The proof-of-address catch means app banks are easiest first: Revolut can often open before you have an address; Monzo and Starling onboard quickly. Add a high-street bank later.

    Get your National Insurance number

Your NI number lets your employer record tax and NI correctly and keeps you off an emergency tax code.

Check whether one is already linked to your eVisa. If not, apply free at gov.uk once in the UK. It can take up to four weeks, so start early; you can work meanwhile.

    Register with a GP

You already paid the Immigration Health Surcharge, so you have NHS access from day one. Registering gives you a doctor when you need one.

Find a GP surgery near where you live and register online, via the NHS App, or on paper. No proof of address or immigration status needed. Save NHS 111 and 999.

Prepare your CV and find work

Most casual and hospitality jobs are filled through online listings and walk-ins.

Adapt your CV to a UK format noting your right to work on the YMS visa. Use Indeed UK, Reed and Totaljobs for general roles; hand CVs in person for hospitality.

    Find a longer-term flat

A flatshare is far cheaper than a hostel, and a payslip makes you a credible tenant.

Look on SpareRoom, Rightmove and OpenRent. Budget a deposit (capped at five weeks rent for most English tenancies) plus a month upfront. Never pay before viewing.
